To Your Health
Breathe for LifeThere is an art to breathing. But, isn’t breathing natural? Yes, but the thousands of breaths we take each day are not the same as the art of breathing. By taking time each day to work on the art of breathing, you will be able to relax your body and ease your mind. It will increase the oxygen levels in your blood that flows to every part of your body and mind.
Your posture plays a very important role in getting the most out of this exercise. Whether you sit on the floor with your legs crossed, or in a straight back chair, it is important to keep your back as straight as possible.
As you breathe in, breathe in through your nose and close your mouth. Breathe deep into the bottom of your lungs. Hold your breathe slightly, and then blow the air out as if you were blowing out a candle. You can contract your abdomen and ribs to push out the excess air.
A calming breathing exercise is to inhale deeply through the nose for a count of 10. Hold the breath for a count of 10 and exhale to a count of 10. Eventually, the count can be built up throughout the entire breath cycle. Repeat the exercise for five minutes.(1)
Our bodies hold a lot of stress within. By incorporating a deep breathing exercise into your daily personal care or meditation time, you can help to alleviate some of the stress or pent up emotions you carry within. Breathe for a healthier you.
